Where can I find a driver for a specific HP printer?

Posted on Mon, Sep 23, 2013

Without the appropriate driver installed on a computer system, a printer generally proves nothing more than just a very large paper weight. While most HP printers come with a driver installation CD, keeping track of such a CD often becomes difficult. However, the driver installation CD is not required, as the Hewlett-Packard website does provide an HP universal print driver. The driver is easy to install and only takes a few minutes of time, ensuring a user can have the printer up in running in only a few short moments.

Finding the Driver

All HP universal driver offerings are available on the Hewlett-Packard website. A user must navigate to the website, then click the "Support" button, located on the top of the website screen. Once the small selection window appears, the user must click the "Drivers and Downloads" provided option.

When the new window loads, type in the product name or number into the "Find a Product" window. If the name or number is not currently available (it is located on the printer's front paneling and on the rear of the device, by the power cord connection port), it is possible to search through available printers through the "Detect My Product" option.

When the product information page opens, select the operating system currently installed on the computer, then choose the download link next to the operating system listing. This downloads the driver directly to the computer, regardless of the computer. Most HP printers run on both Windows and Mac computers, although some older HP printers might only function on one or the other. With the HP universal print driver downloaded, it is now possible to continue with the installation process.

Installing the HP Universal Print Driver

If the driver installation wizard fails to open automatically, double-click the downloaded driver located inside the download folder. With the wizard open, follow the provided prompts and the installation starts momentarily. The installation process should only take a few minutes, and once the installation has finished a small prompt window appears, stating as much. Depending on the computer and printer used, the computer might have to restart for the driver to take affect. Once the restart has completed (if necessary), it is now possible for a user to send print requests to the HP printer.
