Why aren’t HP Remanufactured Cartridges offered?

Posted on Mon, Mar 16, 2015

hp-remanufactured-cartridgeConsumers have two major options when buying printer cartridges; either original HP print cartridges or remanufactured, refilled cartridges. Remanufacturing is an advanced form of recycling or re-using OEM cartridges. Most consumers, who go for remanufactured cartridges, cite the significantly lower cost as the main reason that compels them to buy these aftermarket products instead of going for OEM cartridges. Unfortunately, such consumers do not consider that the advantages of buying original HP cartridges far outweighs the initial cost. Below are some of the reasons that make original cartridges the ideal choice.

The Benefits of Using OEM Cartridges

  1. Print Quality: Original HP cartridges are designed and manufactured using the latest technology to ensure that you are able to achieve excellent print results.
  2. Page Yield: OEM HP print cartridges offer excellent page yield, which cannot be comparable to the yields achievable when using either remanufactured or refilled printer cartridges. Original cartridges are filled with sufficient ink to satisfy the set page yield that the manufacturer has promised.
  3. Quality Certification: All HP products including printers and HP cartridges undergo post-production quality testing and certification, to ensure that their quality and performance is consistent with set regulatory standards. Thus, consumers are guaranteed quality results and performance when they purchase original HP cartridges.
  4. Warranty: Original HP ink and toner cartridges come with a full warranty to cover you against any unexpected defects. Even though HP products are designed and manufactured using state-of-the-art processes and materials, there is still the need to protect consumers from unexpected malfunctions. Hence, you are assured of getting value for money when you buy original cartridges.

Arguments for using Remanufactured or Refilled Cartridges

Even with the above advantages, there are consumers who find remanufactured/refilled cartridges a favorable option for their printing needs. Some of the reasons that they use to support their choice include:

  • Reduced Cost - Remanufactured/refilled cartridges are significantly cheaper than buying OEM print cartridges. However, it is important to note the long-term cost implication, especially with regard to the potential damage to the printing system that aftermarket components are likely to cause. In addition, the reduced page yield and inconsistent print quality doesn’t offer value for money.
  • Eco-friendly: Some critics argue that remanufacturing is an excellent option for dealing with environmental concerns. The belief is that, unlike new OEM print cartridges, the remanufactured cartridges are 100% recycled cartridges, and do not contain any new plastic. In addition, the cartridges come wrapped in recycled packaging, thus ensuring that the environment is safe from waste cartridges.

Disadvantages of Remanufactured Cartridgeshp-remanufactured-print-cartridges

Granted, some of these arguments in support of using aftermarket print cartridges might hold some water, but have you considered their downside as well?

  • Inconsistency - Remanufacturing is, to a large extent, a manual process. It involves taking apart a printer cartridge, replacing/reusing worn out components and then clamping the cartridge back together. The replacements are usually done using aftermarket components, which have not been designed or tested for use for a particular HP printing system. As such, the cartridges are prone to fail after short-term usage. Additionally, these cartridges cannot guarantee optimal results.
  • Damage to printer - Unlike original HP cartridges which are designed as part of the overall printing system i.e. printer, toner, ink and paper, remanufactured cartridges are designed to work with a wide variety of printers. If not careful, these cartridges may cause serious harm to your printer leading to expensive replacements and/or repairs.

Verdict: Should HP offer remanufactured print cartridges?

OEM HP cartridges enable you to achieve excellent printing results. An original cartridge is a technical part, designed to work in perfect harmony with the overall printing system. As such, you are able to achieve the desired performance and print quality.

Remanufactured cartridges, on the other hand, offer a low cost solution for every day printing needs. However, it is important to note that these are basically generic products, manufactured by third parties, and re-designed to fit a wide variety of printers. These cartridges cannot guarantee the same level of quality that you would expect from an original HP cartridge. The quality, reliability, and safety of these products cannot be guaranteed.

HP has, over the years, built a reputation in printing excellence that is comparable to none. HP would be putting its reputation at risk by offering products that they cannot guarantee will perform to their specifications or cause damage to other printing equipment. Therefore, don’t expect to find any HP-branded remanufactured cartridges.
