HP Printer Troubleshooting Tips from the Expert

Posted on Mon, May 18, 2015

If you own a Hewlett Packard printer, you have one of the industry's best printing devices at your disposal. While all sorts of businesses and everyday individuals lean on HP printers to provide high quality printouts, challenges often arise. Below, we offer some HP printer troubleshooting advice that will help you navigate through a wide range of HP printing issues.

HP Printer Troubleshooting: Overcoming Challenges Posed by Firewalls

Firewalls are in place to block threats from infiltrating your network. Unfortunately, firewalls often block the communication between your printer, computer and other devices on the network. Firewalls can prevent you from printing, cause the printer to not be found on the network and display the printer's status as “offline” or “disconnected”. This status can appear even if the printer is properly connected to the network. Here is how to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Double click the HP print and Scan Doctor tool.
  • Click the “Network”.
  • Click “Troubleshoot Firewalls” on the drop down menu.
  • Proceed through the instructions to resolve the firewall hangups.
  • You can also click “Online Firewall” and “Firewall Help” for additional information.

HP Printer Troubleshooting: Printer Network Challenges

It is quite common for HP printers to lose their connection to the network and/or display error messages. Search the HP Support page for the document that pertains to the installation of your printer for either a wireless or a wired connection and/or for the specific error message that keeps popping up. Most HP printers come with a wireless setup wizard tool that can be accessed in the printer's control panel network. In some printers it is found in the wireless settings menu. Follow the setup wizard's steps. It will prompt you to type in your network's name and the password that you have selected to connect your printer to your network.

HP Printer Troubleshooting: USB Connection Problems

Those who are experiencing USB connection problems should first try to unplug and the reconnect the USB cord from the computer as well as the HP printer. If the problem persists, proceed to connect the cable to another available USB port. It is important to note that all HP printer models provide support for USB cables that are 9 feet 10 inches and shorter in length. If your USB cable is longer than this length, you will need to connect a shorter one to ensure compatibility with your HP printer.

HP Printer Troubleshooting: Scanning Issues

If your HP printer does not scan documents to your computer via the control panel, it is not a lost cause. The HP Support page will provide you with assistance. Enter your printer's model number, search for the appropriate document pertaining to scan connection errors and / or the specific error message that appears. If you are curious as to how to go about scanning documents with the built in driver, the solution is not as clear cut. You might have to alter the way in which you scan, depending on your unique HP printer model and the type of driver update.

HP Printer Troubleshooting: Solving Print Quality Issues

If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printed documents, including color photos, do not despair. Printers often produce faded, streaked, fuzzy, blurred and smeared text and pictures. Sometimes the black ink or color ink will not print. If you experience any of these print quality malfunctions, head on over to the HP Support page. Enter your HP printer model number and use the page's search function to find the appropriate document pertaining to correcting print quality issues.

You can also perform a diagnostics test by following these steps:

  • Begin by double clicking the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool.
  • Click “Printer”.
  • Select “Printer Services” from the drop down menu.
  • You'll be presented with a series of icons for various tasks. Choose to print a quality diagnostics page.

The printed quality diagnostics page will help you evaluate all sorts of print quality aspects from streaks and broken lines to faded and missing colors. If the lines and alignment box from your printed quality diagnostics page are not perfectly connected and straight, aligning the print head will remedy the problem.

If the color blocks show missing or faded colors and / or white lines on the print quality diagnostic page, choose to clean the print head. Print heads that are egregiously clogged must be cleaned multiple times in order to fully restore the regular print quality.
