How to Dispose of Printer Toner Cartridges

Posted on Tue, Sep 5, 2017

Whether you use an HP Deskjet printer or a wide format Canon printer, the printer toner is made almost entirely out of plastic. Once spent, the plastic itself is no longer of any use for you, yet simply tossing it in the trash means it will end up in a landfill. Combined with the remnants of ink within the printer tone, this is not a great recipe for a green, eco environment. That is why you need to know how to dispose of printer toner cartridges properly.

printer-toner-cartridgesOffice Supply Store

Your local office supply store and most likely any retail outlet that sells printers accepts ink cartridges for recycling. As more likely than not you’re not able to place it in the recycling bin at home (although check with your local recycling service provider to see if ink toner is accepted), this is a viable option. You can keep your spent cartridges in a bag until the next time you head out to the store. This way, you can take it with you without taking a special trip, just to dispose of the toner.

Governor Business Solutions can provide complimentary recycling services, for businesses within the Southeast Michigan area. If you’re not in the Southeast Michigan area, you can visit Eart911.com and type in your location. The website will then inform you of recycling centers nearby that accept ink cartridges. This way, you’ll never need to travel far in order to recycle your ink.

Money Back Recycling Options

There are a handful of viable recycling options that provide money back for your time and effort. Different services including Recycle4Vets, eCycle Group and Cartridges for Kids accept your empty toner cartridges. Simply head over to one of the provided websites, enter in what you plan to recycle and the company will sent you a main-in package (postage is covered). Many of these locations also accept additional items, including cell phones and tablets, if you’re interested in recycling more than just your toner.

The services listed above are all charity services that take the money earned from your plastic recycling efforts and donate the money to a good cause (such as veteran services or for after school programs for children). If you’re interested in money back in your own pocket, companies like HP offer rebate coupons and discounts through in-store recycling services.

Use Refillable Cartridges

Maybe you’re just tired of having to purchase a new printer toner on the fly when your ink is gone. Constantly ordering brand new cartridges not only can be time consuming but expensive as well. Instead, there are available toner options that are refillable. You need to purchase toner specifically made for refilling, but if you do, you simply can refill the ink level whenever you run low (these OEM cartridges usually can only be refilled a few times before the plastic is just too worn down, but every little bit helps). Doing so helps you completely avoid not only discarding additional plastic but reduce the production of plastic in general, which releases carbon monoxide into the atmosphere.

Recycling With the Source Company

Many ink toner manufacturers also provide recycling options. Many of the companies take gently used printer toner cartridges and refit it for resale. This way, less plastic is used during manufacturing. Companies such as HP have specific programs made for the recycling of company products.

There are plenty of ways to properly dispose of printer toners. All you need to do is decide what works best for you. However you decide to go about recycling your toner, you can breathe a little easier knowing that is one less piece of heavy plastic going to the landfill. For more information on how to properly dispose of Printer Toner Cartridges, contact your printer provider. If your company is located in the Southeast Michigan area, you may also contact Governor Business Solutions, and we’ll be glad to help! Simply call 313-441-4600 for assistance.
